Button within a movie clip

Hi there,
I have designed a movie clip which has buttons on it. When u push the button, I want it to goto a certain scene and /or frame. I am a basic flash user, but used actions on the button within thew movie clip. The action is as follows:
on (release) {
gotoAndPlay("Scene 18", 1);
}
This is using the basic actions view... Why wont it move to any scene i tell it?
