phat masking

when i mask (animation) pretty big pictures .png/.jpg in flash it gets really laggy and ugly speed which i dont want. The jpg quality is already at 40 in flash. any other suggestions?

I don't think I've seen big problems with masks like this... can you give an example?

well its on a site im working on and id really hate to post it cuz its not even close to finished and looks bad ill post it later on though thx for replying at least

What are you masking? I think multiple objects could be a problem, a high frame-rate could also slow things down a little? Oh and changing alphas at the same time can be really taxing!

every image is a .png which is smaller than a .gif.. and i changed the jpeg quality of it in flash to 40.
loads external mc's

its obviously gotta do something with the pictures. Nothing is resized (smaller) its as big as you see.

The main mask affect when the site is loaded doesn't seem *too* slow to me, but I think the reason for it being a little slow is the simple size of those images.

When loading a section, it does indeed seem slow for no particular reason. I've checked and it's simple CPU utilisation - for some reason it takes up a lot of CPU. You could try doing each mask individually and seeing if that helps, or perhaps just playing with what's there. Are you using motion tween or shape tween? Try the other. How large is your mask MC? Is it just a plain square, or is it a textured object? I also just twigged, behind each white square is a slightly bigger faded square - that will slow things a lot. Try just making those squares a particular colour and don't worry about seeing through them - that should help and won't necessarily look any different as the background image is very difficult to see.

But you have no reason to worry about critique - it looks very promising to me!

coo thx for the help im just going through everything making sure everythings optimized. Seems to run a little faster with the small changes that ive done so far.

The biggest problem i have now is finding out if i should move my navigation somewhere else on the site or what? cuz under 1024 X 768 resolution it cuts off the navigation and you have to scroll. Any ideas?

Why not move the navigation to the top instead of the bottom?

Definetly more practical... It would look better (I think) with a small gap at the top, but that makes it less practical again...
