my movie loader gets to 100% and then waits for ages before moving on and playing the movie... why?!

Ok, the problem was that you were expecting flash to stop on a frame but still execute the code on it. That doesn't happen.
You don't have to make a loop in your code in order to make a preloader, you have to make a loop in your animation. So that flash can go back to the same frame over and over again in order to check if loading has completed.

I figured out a good way of doing what you wanted. I took the loading "star" and put it into a movieclip, where each frame has an additional arm of the star. Then I wrote a simple script to take the percentage and direct the movieclip to the appropriate frame.
