Re: FLASH a no-no in a website?
Found it! Yeah, like I said it's unfinished, but you'll get the picture. Oh, and don't click on any of the links in the showroom because you'll have to refresh to get back. I know I finished everything in the showroon at one point, but I think I got annoyed at how it looked so I scrapped it intending to start over.

Man, digging up old stuff is awesome. I just found this beauty of a logo I designed.
Sorry... this is a little off-topic, but I forgot about it until I saw it in my Flash file |

Re: FLASH a no-no in a website?
I hate to say it Ryan, but that flash site, is one of those flash sites, that I would have left. I just found it boring; you could do all of that with XHTML/CSS. But whatever!!

Well, I still have the vision for it. I know it's sloppy now, but I might take it up just for fun when Adobe releases Flash 9. Besides, my style has changed a lot in two years

Re: FLASH a no-no in a website?
I have to say I tend to agree with jacob on the neostream site. I really like it a lot. It is very great to see animation used like that.
The one thing I have been questioning for my own sites lately has been a) Do I create a full-flash interactive web site and hope my advertising market works out (seeing as old fashion web search bots can't really grab content off of flash files--- or can they?? ). b) Put up with creating a half flash interactive site that contains most information in css content (which search bots would go crazy over and devour). In the past, designing a site was all about how to attract the user to that site. Still today the advertising companies out there that say they will drive more traffic to your site rely heavily on the search bots to weed out every item they lay into the html code. I've gone with a full flash site for now. I'm not sure if that is the right direction or not. As you all have mentioned, a lot of companies are using flash in some form on their site. I have seen that most of the big companies don't do a full flash site and the only reason I can see them not doing so would be for those that can't view flash or for the advertisement (traffic) generation that comes from html sites. -anthony |

Re: FLASH a no-no in a website?
There is also accessibility to consider when using flash. Don't forget that some companies actually give a monkeys about the visually impared and those users who may be less able to access content.
Some companies are legally obliged to make content and functionality accessible under the WCAG. Flash is for those who place more importance on the look of a design, often forgetting other crutial aspects like simple navigation, accessibility and loading times. XHTML and CSS2 can do a lot these days. If you want an animation do a small one in flash (or animated image?) and put it inside a positioned div. Personally, if I visit a website and its all flash from the start I'll leave. I do like flash when its used properly and minimally, it can have its place. A lot of car companies started using flash which showed off their products really well, changing colours, picking alloys, 3D views etc. However, if you take a look at www.bmw.co.uk and other leading manufacturers lately, everything is being replaced with XHTML and CSS. |
