Creating a Forum

Can anyone explain to me how to make my own forum without using a free forum hosting site like www.runboard.com or anything?

Re: Creating a Forum

will take you years to make your own... good luck

or you could buy some hosting and use free forum software. SMF is probably the best if you don't want to spend money.

Re: Creating a Forum

download PHPbb it is exactly like SMF although it is free and in my opinion it is better.download it from here http://www.phpbb.com/.
By the way this forum is made by VBulletin it is like PHPbb and SMF although it has some more functions and you have to buy it. Go to this site to find out more about that http://www.vbulletin.com/

SMF is free. But I would go with PHPBB if your going the free route. Actually I would go with phpbb no matter what, it has a lot simpler design code wise for building plug ins and a simpler administration panel as compared to VB. Which would definately be a plus if your new to this.

Re: Creating a Forum

Yah, but you made a complicated guest book more than a forum. But its nice so enjoy it! By the way, creating your own forums isn't all that hard, its maintaining the users that is hard to do with creating your own, because there are so very many things that need to be programmed in to control. So using a pre-built system helps a lot with that because like mentioned above, if you were to recreate one like this, it would take you a REALLY long time.

Ohh, and flat files are great for a really small thing like this, but you really don't want all those files if your running a forum that is going to have 1,000 posts a day. So just something to keep in mind. BTW - I do my CMS's in flat file because I like it .

Re: Creating a Forum

Hi,

In the past I have used some of the following forums for client development:

http://www.yabbforum.com/downloads.php
http://forum.snitz.com/specs.asp
http://www.phpbb.com/downloads/ - highly recommended
http://www.webwizguide.com

check on google for free forum downloads and i'm sure you will find some more.

I guess the best solution would be a php / mysql server solution running on linux platform, most cost effective.

regards
