Excel max fields

Does anyone know the maximum allowed fields that can be used in Excel when it is used for a datasource?

I have been given an Excel spreadsheet that needs to be imported programmically into MSSql. The problem is that the spreadsheet is, wait for it... 169 fields wide and 33,000 records deep.

It is being coded in .net, which it is complaining that their are too many fields in the Excel spreadsheet.

I have tried exporting as a comma/tab delimited file, but because of the data in the spreadsheet containing tabs and commas, it does not go to well on the import.

Another ideas I had was to try and do a "select * into" query, but fear I will have the same problems.

Any ideas?

Got a simple fix that will do for now.

I got a macro in Excel to strip all the extra CRLF, etc. Then export as a tab delimited file.

Works a treat now. Turned out that the extra tabs were CRLF's.

It's all boring stuff. Calculating shipping charges/contracts for 20'/40' containers from port to port/shipping routes in Europe and USA. Stage 2 is calculating charges from port to final destination via train/lorry. That could be interesting !?!
