Joomla or Wordpress

Hi All,

Recently I have heard alot about Joomla and Wordpress, I don't actually know much about them and was wondering if you lot could help me?

I know that they both are CMS's but thats about it, could you please inform me on which is the best one out of the two, which one offers better functionality along with possible URL's to tutorials?

Regards

Wayne

Wordpress is pretty much done for you. It's perfect for someone like me that doesn't want to know how to program...

If you are planning to create a wordpress theme from scrath its probably useful to know XHTML, CSS, PHP and MySQL.

Or you could take this tutorial. I am half way through it, and its pretty good. You don't need to know any programming languages to take it.

I don't fully understand what you are trying to say. You can host wordpress locally on your computer with xampp.. but you will need a host it online for people to see it.

Re: Joomla or Wordpress

You need to run wordpress on a server of some kind whether that is locally, on your own computer, or online. I do believe there a significant differences between wordpress and joomla though I've not used either extensively so I couldn't clue you in. I find wordpress a little lacking for most things, with it being a blogging engine primarily, but with a little creativity you can use it for all sorts of different things.

Pete.

Re: Joomla or Wordpress

Like pa007 said, Wordpress is actually just a blogging engine, whereas Joomla is a full-blown Content Management System. They are both skinnable and need PHP / mySQL to run.

Re: Joomla or Wordpress

Actually it depends on what you want to do. Wordpress also has a hosted solution (it's limited but a good start) at www.wordpress.com

It is built primarily for blogging, but can be used to host a site. If you need a corporate site or need to add many types of Intranet items such as file systems, Joomla is set up to operate more like a web site, and has blogging widgets. Check out their respective sites. Wordpress or Google's Blogger are easier to set up and use for a beginner.

Re: Joomla or Wordpress

For me, Wordpress and Joomla are different. Wordpress is simple and fast when it comes to publishing. Wordpress is built around writing content and publishing that content. Joomla from the beginning built around presentation of content - reflecting absolute meaning for CMS and it is more powerful as a CMS.

Re: Joomla or Wordpress

After reading what you have posted, I would recommend Wordpress. Joomla can be quite complicated to configure where as WP is simple for the new users to get a blog up and running.
WP has the functionality that any basic user can get up and running in no time and can be configured easily once you know you way around and start learning different sorts of coding it can be adapted very easily.
Word of warning, if you delete code that is needed the site will collapse so always have the old code so as you can go back and have a working site again.
On the hosting side, Wordpress do have a solution but it is limited, but domain names and hosting packages are so cheap these days for a basic package.
Sorry for the length, hope this helps.

Re: Joomla or Wordpress

Wordpress = Blog
Joomla = CMS

^^ Thats the official descriptions although more and more are using Wordress as a CMS.

Joomla is a big learning curve but allows for just about anything. The Joomla extensions directory is pushing up towards 2000 and counting and the support forums are second to none.
Wordpress is easiest out of the box but the templating of it is somewhat trickier than joomla. Using the back-end of wordpress is so easy my mum has one - which is nice as I was beginning to believe she spent £600 on a desktop just to play solitaire.

When in doubt - install em both locally, spend an hour in each and let that do the talking for you.
Some take to Joomla, some cant stand it and vice versa with wordpress.
