Beginner Resources
Hi,
I have experience with Flash, graphics, and a little bit of HTML, but I'm hoping to learn CSS and move to standards compliant websites. Does anybody have any tips on good places to learn CSS from scratch? It's kind of daunting looking at the ol' blank screen. I've been perusing the CSS Zen Garden and the W3 schools website, but I'm always looking for more resources. Thanks! |

Re: Beginner Resources
Tell me about it!
lol I just posted somewhere else that I've been looking at websites and not getting very far until I bought a book yesterday which I find much better. This is the second time I posted it so I hope I'm not breaking forum rules on advertising (it's nothing to do with me); "CSS Mastery - Advanced Web Standards Solutions" by Andy Budd. Not as free as the online sites but I found answers to a lot of questions I wasn't getting answered elsewhere already (only bought it yesterday). |

Re: Beginner Resources
I should add, that I'd already received a good deal of help in my efforts to transfer to CSS, on this forum and only bought the book so I didn't bug everyone quite so much.
The more I read, and play about with it, the more I think I may be doing that anyway. |

Re: Beginner Resources
Becoming a little less satisfied with this book... just come across this "list of errata" Andy Budd has uploaded in the form of a .pdf file.
http://cssmastery.com/CSSMastery-Errata.pdf Rather unimpressed that there is so much that refers to basic stuff that could waylay the unsuspecting (who else would go looking for it?). |

Re: Beginner Resources
the best resource i can find is google. im not being a smart a**. its true. all the answers are out there and there is a quick search window in your browser if you want one. dont forget to check the "groups" section for help. its a developer message board from way back when. i have a massive css bookmark list if anyone wants it email me.

Re: Beginner Resources
I think http://www.echoecho.com/css.htm is by the the best CSS rescource I've come across for beginners. I learned off it, it gives you a complete start from scratch tutorial on how to get started with CSS, withs w3 for more advanced CSS.

I agree Google is the way to go, but for a complete noobie, I have no clue where to start. It does turn up hundreds of useful results whenever I look for anything specific, which is quite handy. " http://www.echoecho.com/css.htm" I went through this tutorial as well, thanks for the link. It seems bit more comprehensive than the ones that make a website from scratch. Now, I need to come up with some project site to do that's not completely useless since I'm not comfortable with hiring out my marginal CSS skills yet. The only way I could learn Flash and After Effects was to constantly do projects, so I'm sure I'll have to make a few CSS sites to figure out the technicalities. I guess portfolio sites are always fun to make again and again. |

Little CSS editor that will make it easy for you to see how changing certain properties will affect your page. It helped me no end in the beginning.

Re: Beginner Resources
Firefox has many great extensions as well for these sorts of things.
Web Developer Extension https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/60/ If you only use Firefox for one thing, its extensions should be it. You can edit the CSS live and do many many cool things.

Once you go a week with the web developer extension you will wonder how you got by without it. Good for learning too. You can use it to do all kinds of cool stuff like outline elements, show/hide stuff etc.. very cool indeed.
