tables for navigation?
if most of my page is designed using CSS, would it be ok to code the left navigation menu using tables. or would this harm my search engine ranking?

I dunno, I believe Rob is the SEO expert here but It would definately annoy me if you did it.

It's a good rule of thumb to not use tables for anything but tabular data. Menus should be constructed using lists. <ul></ul> & <li></li>
