Whats a good width to use these days?

Hey guys

With monitors obviously getting larger etc, what is a sensible width to use on websites these days? Would 800px be safe or am i best going with 768?

Thanks, Danny322

I think if you check the statistics, you will see that 1024x768 resolution is still widely used ...
But I think it depends on your target users, if you are going to make a website which you want everybody see this you should make it safe for 1024x768 resolutions, if not it depends on your target users....

I have read in numerous places that the "standard" should now be to 960 pixels.

danny,
If you want to be "safe" use 750-760px to take into account the sliding bars and borders on 800x600.
I check my statistics regularly, and for most sites directed to North America and Western Europe, the percentage of 800x600 resolution is down to under 5%. As a result I have started making 1024 (i.e. 975 px) the new standard in layout for those sites.

you could always go with a fluid design that adjusts with each screen resolution.

I see no reason to force 4.5% of my visitors to scroll horizontally.

It's not that hard to optimize a site for 1024*768, but make it "squash" down to 800*600.
