Arrow Space on right of site, cant remove it

Hi there,

For some unknown reason I have a huge wad of space on the right hand side of my site.

I have tried everything I can think of but cant cure it.

Would someone mind casting an eye over my code to see if they can explain it?

?>

Umm, where exactly? No problem in FF & IE7

UPDATE: Not quite the problem you described, but all hell breaks loose in IE6!

Re: Space on right of site, cant remove it

SOLVED:

I checked again and found my footer container div was set to 100% width.
Phew!

Thanks anyway

Webforumz is such a handy local resource!

I gave up trying to please IE6 altogether lol.
In my friends pc using IE6 some of the fonts are blue where in mine they are black. I hate IE

IE7 is fussy as well, padding isnt the same as in FF so you have to hack it...
Bout time microsoft made their browser as nice as FireFox.

Any way, rant over...

How does IE6 go nuts buddy?
Does it look ok in ie7?

How do u run ie6 and 7 on the same machine???

Thanks!

If your question for this thread is sorted, mark it solved using 'thread tools' at the top

You might wanna check your site in IE6. It's quite a mess. And considering the market share it still has, I would strongly recommend looking into it. Anyone that hits this is going to leave promptly

Re: Space on right of site, cant remove it

Hi again,
yes I see your point.

Doesn't IE just do your head in lol.

Ok so I guess my issue isn't as solved as I thought so I guess I am going to need some help on this one..

My first question is should I make a new topic or continue here?

My second question is how do I run ie6 on the same machine as IE7?

And my last question would be should I hack the CSS or make a new IE6 only style sheet?
I think make a style sheet for ie6 and use an <--- if thingy.

Sorry, I have only been doing CSS for about 6 months or so.

This site is for my business, I am much better at building PC's than I am at web design but I am keen to learn.
Someday, despite my bad luck with certain colleges, I hope to learn through up to a C language.

Thanks again!

PS, thanks for the screens, they helped!!!!

Re: Space on right of site, cant remove it

I'd probably recommend making a new topic for this one. But have a crack at it first and see how you go. You could make an IE6 only stylesheet, but you'd have to override all the styles you set in your original CSS.

The best option, if it's possible, try locating the bug(s) in your current CSS through trial and error. (plus I'll try my best to see what might be the major problem causer)

Ok, before we start any CSS troubleshoots, you've got to get rid of this at the very start of your HTML

Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
That's triggering quirks mode for IE6 which can cause all sorts of issues. Delete it. You don't need it.

Re: Space on right of site, cant remove it

Thanks Jackfranklin, got all the ie's

aso186: Woahhhh what a result, better already!

Looks to me like the only issues remaining are with the div which contains the cart, a transparent png fix and the borders round the custom build forms check boxes.

Oh and the login area which is a module for Joomla which is powering the sites core and has its own styling.

Also please excuse the state of my css. The site started out as pure html and css but was adapted to work with joomla last minute.

Re: Space on right of site, cant remove it

No problem about your CSS Things certainly look better!

On an unrelated note, that pop-up that springs down with 'Polite Notice - best viewed with Firefox' - once is OK, but it appears on every page navigation and gets annoying pretty quickly. For your users, I'd recommend keeping it just to the front page.

Good luck with IE6. I wouldn't worry about anything lower, IE5 will be non-existent very soon.

I disagree. It's not okay.

Don't tell your users what browser to use. They won't appreciate it.

Just make it work in their browser as best you can. Don't even inform them about alternative browsers: it's a distraction (just like "valid HTML" badges are a distraction).

Re: Space on right of site, cant remove it

Hi Mike,

you make an interesting point.

The way I'm looking at it is that I would far prefer to give a visitor the option to view the site as it should look.
I totally agree about telling people what browsers to use and not to use but I'm merely suggesting that they use FF.

Personally, I find FF to be an all round better browser than IE could ever hope to be.
For instance, half hours browsing with IE and the machine is spammed up to high heaven.
You run any cleaning program and you will find more spam after using IE than using FF.
Or at least thats the case with the machines I deal with.
Also, IE is far to fussy when it comes to displaying designs requiring work arounds just to display what other browsers display correctly.

I do try to compensate for IE when I design but the more complex the design, the more ajustments and allowances you have to make for IE.

I do however take your point on board and I will attempt to clean the site up over xmas so that at least IE6 is happy with it, but due to personal preference, I will still promote FF as it is in my oppinion a far better browser.

Since switching to it 3 years ago or so back, I have not had any hijacking of my browser at all. I dont get 300 porn popups or dialers etc.
But hey, each to their own and as an up coming designer, IE is something I will have to tackle, this I have no choice on due to it's (god knows why) popularity.

I just prefer FF. I'm sure some prefer avant, netscape etc anything has to be better than IE :/ lol

Thanks guys!

Mike, I know you think it's not okay, and in fact, neither do I. But the reason I said what you quoted, is that, at a push, once is OK, because technically weasel has a right to put what ever he prefers on his site. I'm not going to tell him to abolish it, but simply suggest a workaround.

Re: Space on right of site, cant remove it

I completely agree that Firefox is better. IE is rubbish; I hate it with burning vehemence. IE has obstructed the improvement of web standards for years.

During the process of designing a site, I often find myself putting up these discreet "upgrade your browser" notices. It's a way of expressing my frustration with IE.

But I always take them down, because they don't help my users. No-one is going to change browsers just for viewing my site.

When I started writing valid code, I put badges on my footers. I was so proud of myself: valid HTML, valid CSS, triple-A accessibility. But again, I took them down later.

Yes, I gathered as much. And you're absolutely right: once is much better than every time.

I just prefer the direct approach: because I think it's a bad idea, I suggest he abolishes it.

And of course he has a right to put whatever he prefers on his site. "I have the right" seems so frequently to be the expression of a stymied mind. Sure, you "have the right" to think something or do something; and other people "have the right" to think and do something different. We all have these rights, orbiting our heads like little moons, interfering with our ability to see the world clearly, and bouncing off each other when two minds get too close.

What a nuisance talk about rights is! Let's put our rights into higher orbit, somewhere out the way. They still exist, but we don't need to grab hold of them the moment we disagree. The tides will be calmer when the moons are farther out.

That may be the most convoluted metaphor I've ever used.

Re: Space on right of site, cant remove it

Hi there, Me again...

Well, I have pondered much over this site and have decided to rewrite the index template and css and hopefully simplify it.
I have started this and am making much progress, greatly aided with the advice from this post and the help of multiple IE's and a dual monitor set up.

As I write each new line for the index or css file, I check it in FF, IE6 & IE7.
Anything in the CSS that differs in the way it displays (which hasn't been much so far) gets an _Underscore hack applied to it.

For instance my content pane, the widths differed extremely when displayed in IE compared to FF, so a simple _width: whatever; did the trick.

I can see my re-write beginning to take effect and hopefully, with a couple of days good work, it should be done, ready and working in FF, IE6 & IE7

Thanks for all the help and advice guys.

I figured writing a sepperate IE sheet wasn't worth it for the sake of the small amount of differences I have noticed so simple _ hacks will do for now.

I must say, the css I am writing now isn't as messy as the previous sheet lolz
