Hosting clients

I don't know if this is the right place to put this but i've recently taken on a dedicated server and was wondering if any of you had any tips on getting a few customers to help me cover the costs and use the spare resources?

Cheers

Re: Hosting clients

I have never done anything like that before. I'm curious how people do it too. I guess you could create subdomains for people and charge them or maybe even host their domains there with a modest web site?

Hmmm, that might be harder then you think. There are a lot of people in the hosting market, so even with a great website that has been optimized for search engines you still are not going to be able to become top in the market. Perhaps, start locally. See if friends or family need a website, and offer to host it for them.

Andrew, you can try posting your offer at other hosting related forums as WHT or DP but you will have to take care while choosing your partner better offer you excess recourses for few bucks to your friends/relative.

Re: Hosting clients

Hi AndrewLondon,

From experience it's hard. When you charge for webhosting people expect full control panels, all the features and expect you to look after security etc. and as the others have said theres a lot of competition.

I would advise that you should keep the server to yourself and if necessary get a cheaper one. Once you start offering paid for services, say you get 2-3 signups you then have a commitment to fulfil what you sold and you lose the ability to cancel the server if your finances get tight or something.

It could quickly become more of a liability than help with the cost.

I hope that helps and isnt too negative :/

Regards,

Dewetha

I share a dedicated server with two of my work colleagues. We each pay a third....
