The wannabe juggler's quest
Posted Oct 27th, 2007 at 19:46 by Rakuli
Karinne started a good idea by going into detail about her hobbies so I thought I would do the same with one of mine.
At the beginning of this year after a fun week catching up with friends in my home state, acting like clowns, juggling and messing around, I decided I wanted to become a good juggler... Now I have been juggling (very unskillfully) 3 balls for a few years but never really spent much time on it and it wasn't impressive to anyone... I decided I wanted to juggle larger numbers of balls.
One thing I have always noticed is that there are many many people who can juggle 3 balls... The number who can juggle 4? Not near as many and 5 fewer still, 7 balls and we're getting to even smaller number..Larger numbers are possible but beyond my reach at the moment and now I digress...
So at the beginning of the year I decided I wanted to juggle in numbers and so began my journey....
I dubbed the trip "Wannabe Juggler's Quest" and for some reason known only to my minds condition on the flight home, I started a video diary of my progress.
It has become an obsession of mine now. Whenever I get a chance I juggle, everywhere I go I take my juggling balls with me in case I may get an idle moment to practice some more..
Now the good thing about all of this is that unlike my skills with web deveolpment, this talent impresses those that can't do it.. lol
I can now juggle 7 balls for about 30 throws (which qualifies as being able to juggle them) but can't do any tricks with 7 yet..
I have been working on my 5 ball juggling for a few months as well and can comfortably juggle 5 and also do a few tricks. I am slowly reaching the goal I set and I hope to become an even better juggler in the future.
I would ask that every one who reads this actually gives juggling a go.. There seems to be a defeatist attitude when the topic comes up about "Unco-ordination" but I can tell you this. There is not a single person that can ever pick up three balls and immediately juggle them, juggling taks practice and it has been proven that *everyone* (who can physically throw and catch)can juggle if the time is put into it. It just takes some patience.
They actually use juggling in some large universities and corporations as an exercise on problem solving because juggling is more mental than physical. It requires analysing the problem and finding flaws, then through process of elimination, removing the errors in the flow and juggling...
-- very deep this juggling business.
LOL..
Anyway, if you wanted to see my latest juggling clip (some 5 ball tricks and me in a funny hat) I have just upload Wannabe Juggler's Quest - Part 3 on my MySpace page.
If anyone is inspired to juggle please let me know how you go and I can recommend some tips and books.. I would also love to hear about your progress.

hahahah! I'm VERY impressed! You are the guy that everyone is going to want to bring to a party! *Nodding... that's my friend*
I can juggle three! To juggle more do you have to have large hands? The only other juggling I do is life! Kids, hubby, job, hobbies, house! Does that count? Nahhhhhhhhhhhh... no one's ever impressed with that! LOVED the video! |

You don't need big hands-- I have been showed up by a very petite young lady who can juggle 7 very very impressivly.. The reason is that once you get the balls started you only ever have one in each hand.
I guess big hands help you start because it is a bit awkward starting with so many balls in your hands. Wow! you can juggle 5 lol - impressive |

LOL I meant 5 (Kids, hubby, job, hobbies, house)
To be honest, there weren't many outtakes in this one.. The clip is 3 1/2 minutes and I started with 6 minutes of footage... Now, in my first two videos there was more out-take than actual clip.. lol . I'm working on some routines where I can get through solid without drops so I can do some street entertaining |

Me model? no... I will take that as a compliment...
I won an award at work an was invited to a big award ceremony so I bought a new suit... LOL mum made me take a photo for her so I just put the camera on auto shoot and sepia'd up the blue a little -- it makes a good avatar shot.. |

Hey Rakuli,
Great post and awesome video. Very entertaining. I can juggle 3 balls smoothly (with some tricks), and 4 with dropping one every now and then. I started when I was about 11. A pro came to my school and taught us the basics. From there on out, I practiced and ended up with a rough 4 ball juggling act... I hope to reach 5, so I'll leave 7 up to you. I am not going for such big numbers. |

Once you get to 5, 7 is not actually that much harder - just higher throws and faster hands...
5 is the epitome of numbers juggling though, if you can get to 5 then it is much easier from there... (Getting to 5 took about 1 month solid practice -- patience and putting the balls down when you feel frustration kicking in are keys) |

The most wacky thing? Probably 2 soccer balls, a stuffed toy cat, a table tennis ball and a hacky sack... that looked a bit odd..
