apache 'http://localhost' not working

I recently got into using apache and got stuck after installing. I looked on a bunch of tutorials and went step by step to install. here's the problem:

after installing, I get no errors.
but yet when I open ie or ff and type in http://localhost, it just sits there, then gives my a page not found error.


settings:
network domain: localhost
server name: localhost
administrator email address: xxxx@hotmail.com
picked for all users, on port 80, as a service, -- recommended

configuration:
server root: C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2
Listen 80
ServerAdmin xxxx@hotmail.com
ServerName localhost
DocumentRoot "D:/site"
<Directory "D:/site">
DirectoryIndex index.html index.php

please help me out.

Which version of Apache are you running?

The two biggest problem causers are firewalls and malformed config files.

If you're running any form of firewall (even XP's built in one), turn it off and test localhost.

If your problem's still not solved, resort back to the default config file (google 'Apache X default config file', X being the version) and test again.

nevermind, I went through the error.log and looked up a few things online and then added this line: Win32DisableAcceptEx, now it works great.

I agree with jack. Installing individual programmes like apache, Mysql, PHP IS A REAL PAIN!!.

xampp will do it for with very little hassle.

thanks for the suggestion guys, I didn't know what xampp was, I hadn't even heard of it, but now that I know, I'll definitely use it, you do not know how much time I put into getting apache to work, installing php onto apache was a little painful, but mysql, oh my gosh, frustration through the roof, and I still don't have it running yet. thanks again for everything. later then.
