[SOLVED] newbie needs some advice

im just setting up a webserver at home and im going to be using php, so have downloaded php 5.2.5 ready. i need to use a database can i use sql server 2000 with php?

will this work?

or will i have to download mysql

whats the difference, how will affect me?


any help will be amazing thanks

Yes, php can access microsoft sql server setups. The configuration is a bit trickier due to it not being a very commonly found combination.

There are benefits either way with database software, obviously they support the majority of the SQL standard but each have their own functions and additions that have benefits and flaws.

Personally, I would recommend you go for mysql as it's the most common combination database with PHP and there is MUCH more documentation out there to help you setting it up.

If you are used to writing queries for MSSQL you may wish to continue in this vein as MYSQL may be a different to what you're used to.
