Free advertising?

Could somebody give a run down of all the best FREE advertising sites where you can submit your URL. I've done the likes of Yell.com. Any more?

Thanks.

Re: Free advertising?

you really should submit to Dmoz.... and if you can afford to, take the yahoo directory paid inclusion.

Be very very careful when submitting to both of these directories that you read the rules word for word.... not not skip any part of the rules.... also read any tips they have on submission.

If you break a single rule or do not follow the submission process to the letter..... if you submit to the wrong category (or one is slightly more relevant).... if you not not submit a thoughtful and self-promotion free description..... then you've blown it (and in the case of yahoo in all likelyhood, lost your money)

It's such a time consuming and exact process, that there are companies who specilise in submitting to these two directories.
This is a very time zapping part of an SEO's tasks.

Re: Free advertising?

If you like you could manually submit to all of these directories:
http://www.ranktips.com/directory-list.htm
You might need a month to spare though.

Re: Free advertising?

Thanks for that great list! I've started submitting my site already (i've got 2 so i'll be a couple of months).

Question: is dmoz the best one to submit to? I presume it is as everyone always suggests it.

I've submitted but i wasn't as careful as Rob recommends. How long do they take to get back to you?

And, will submitting to all those on that list really help? How much will it improve my traffic?

Thanks.

DMOZ directory is used as the Google Directory.... A listing in there will affect your page rank.

Dont expect to get a listing... and they will never get back to you even if they do list you. In addition, it could take up to a few years for a listing. This is important: wait at least 6 months from your LAST submission and try again paying very very careful attention to EVERYTHING

It will improve your exposure, page rank and consequently index position.... the effects may take a while to filter through after you are listed.

I'd be leary of posting your site on freebie/unpopular link directories, it might actually hurt your ranking...

What?

I've read from a few good sources that if you have sites linking to you, and they're not viewed well in Google's opinion, it can take away from your own ranking.

I'm one of the few American's here and I'm not quite sure of the analogy you're making, but I'm sure it's correct

Re: Free advertising?

chink in your armour?

in medieval times knights used to aim for a chink in an opponants armour as its the weak spot. so they could kill them...

Re: Free advertising?

Acchiles heel. Acchiles was an amazing knight but had one 'chink in his armour' around his acchiles tendon (hence the name). I guess my acchiles heel is my over-enthusiasm to succeed - it gets you banned from forums!

Re: Free advertising?

To correct everyone with misinformed opinions.....

Your ranking can only be harmed if YOU link to sites google deems as 'bad neighbourhoods'.

One cannot adversely affect the rank of competitors simply by placing their links on bad sites.

How do you know if Google regards a site to be in a 'bad neighbourhood'?
