Learning ASP.NET

Hi Guys,

I am thinking about learning ASP.NET and I am wondering whether it is better to learn it with C# or VB.NET and what the differences are, can someone help me?

My theory is that C# is a more powerful language and is therefore the better option.

I'd go with C# personally - it doesn't really make any difference to the power of your site that I can see...

But if you ever want to get employed using ASP.net, all the companies love the C# - to be honest though, it's not really a problem switching between them. You'd be comfortable using the other language in under a week after the switch, most likely.

If your more comfortable with VB or you've found some good tutorials using it, then it doesn't actually make much of a difference.

By the way - "Teach yourself ASP.net in 21 days" is a brilliant book... I read some of it after I'd been working with the framework for a while; and wished I'd started learning with that book instead!

You'll eventually get paid more to work with C#. It's the most difficult option and not widely taught by colleges and universities anymore.

I'd use VB.net though because it's more 'main stream'. More jobs available, more flexible, more resources, etc

Well after waying up my options i have decided to go the C# route since i have never really liked VB.

Thanks for your responses, i have actually bought a book called Beginning ASP.NET 2.0 with C# (Wrox Beginning Guides) as this came highly recommended from several sources!

Neither is more powerful. They're totally interchangeable. The market has its reasons for liking both.

Here , add VB.Net between C# and JavaScript, and (IMHO) move that block above PHP.

Just my two cents here:

It doesn't hurt to learn both. You never know when you will get a project that is in VB.NET so you may as well get comfortable with both. You wanna be able to put both on your resume just in case....

All depends on what you want to do, if your just planning on doing websites then there is no real difference between the languages except VB.net is easier, less strinct with syntax and good for learning.

If however your looking at doing more integration with other things such as applications and at machine code level then c# is good.

Like what a lot of people say here best to learn both as it's not too much different
