I designed this for a website I am going to launch soon. At the moment it is completely static XHTML apart from the php submission forms and upload form. All comments welcome on design and whether I should use a php admin and cms system.

Re: Free CSS

Mikka, I'm sorry but the colors just don't ring my bell at all. Also, the page is too wide for a 1048 monitor. Nice graphic in the header, though.

The text in the Google ads is cut off in FF2.

As far as php CMS sytem, I'm a big php buff so I'm always going to have a site full of it. It looks like you're going to have template uploads, so you'll need something for that.

Re: Free CSS

I already have a form for the upload system. Which google ad is cut off in FF2? no one else has mentioned that. Also the design is just wide, I have designed it for people with large monitors and res.

Opposite opinion from others. Other people didnt like the banner GFX but liked the rest

Re: Free CSS

Can't say I am feeling it really. Nothing on this site stands out to me. It looks like a generic template and I dunno. I am just picky I guess. I haven't even checked the source code. That was my first impression.

Re: Free CSS

Well I have never seen a site with column headers and banner the same as mine. To me this was my most original and well designed site compared to the more positive comments received by the http://www.freecss.info design. Thanks for comments though. I may be looking at it from a bias point of view. It may take time for me to realize where it falters

Craziness! Design for as many people as you possibly can! Unless you can guarentee your every person in your target demographic uses high-res/widescreen monitors - don't alienante them...

I'm not that keen on your heading bar - it looks really empty to me and the heavy black really doesn't fit in with the airy modernity of the rest of the layout. I also think the banner is too long - I'd say make it at most 4x the size of one of your heading background images.

To be honest - nothing about your site makes me want to read more... this is a general design flaw, and I'm not experienced enough to know how to fix it for you. (Although I think it has something to do with the width of that left menu - and the empty space between the menu options text and the content area at normal size).

Anyway - just my initial thoughts,

Snow

Re: Free CSS

Well basically I see that people going to the site will be interested in computers hence the category of css. Therefore i predict that many of them will have high res wide monitors. Even when I used an 800x600 res it doesnt mean you can't view the whole page, it just means it is awkward. To make the design fluid bring up so many problems and to make it thinner will restrict content which is the main part of the site. That is my logic behind the width.

EDIT: Also just noticed a huge error on a 800 x 600 res. Almost the whole of the left column gets cut off. Something to do with the way I am centering the wrapper div. Must check up on it before getting php done.

Previous design for the site: 1 - 2

Re: Free CSS

On CT I had a vote and got 20 - 3 in favour of new design. I might just scrap it and start again though.

Re: Free CSS

Yeah, I agree. Stick with site #1. You should never design a site that doesn't fit in an 800 width screen resolution. While most people use 1024 or higher, they don't always keep their browser in full screen mode. I'm one of those people, I keep it between 800 and 900 pixels wide even though I have a 1440 x 900 resolution.

Re: Free CSS

Far, far, far too wide for a kick off. I don't mind the colours but the site is still a little rough around the edges...

Re: Free CSS

Love the first one! It's much more cozy and user friendly than the wider one!

Re: Free CSS

Instead of redoing design #3 i think i may remove the right column and put it onto the left column which will solve width issues. Also remove w3c to free up space. I really dislike my first design now for some reason after liking at the start so I dont think I am going to revent to it. I also wanted to change the black shape in the banner but so far havent come up with anything better.

Re: Free CSS

I did those changes and resulted in this :
http://www.psshapes.yurx.com/CSS4/

I am having trouble centering the desing though. margin:0 auto isnt working due to the fact the wrapper tag must be floated in order to have the content inside. I am using the left:50% margin-left:-xxxpx which works but does not center exactly unless 800x600 get cuts off. All tips on this welcomed and also opinions on whether you prefer it or not.

Re: Free CSS

I know how you feel about getting tired of a certain design. It happens to me once in a while, but don't disregard what we're all saying here! Maybe you could work on a hybrid of sorts?

Re: Free CSS

Reason I say that is due to the feedback on other forums. Other forums much prefer #3. Will just stick with #3 as I have done more SEO and sorts on it. May release #1 design for free.

I could really do with some help on the centering problem on design number 4. I using a poor method which doesnt work properly. Using margin:0 auto doesnt work due to the main content all being floated.

Oh and I started a new design but got lost and didnt know where to go with it:

Coding is looking good. I would put the CSS in an external link though.
