Simple Flash 8 problem (Hopefully)...

I've just started using Flash 8 from Flash 5, and I'm trying to do something seamingly straight forward.

I have a symbol (Graphic, which is just some text) on the stage, I've highlighted it, and all I want to do is change the alpha setting.

In Flash 5 all I'd do would be to select the symbol, go down to the bottom right corner, choose alpha from the effects, and drag the little bar or change the value.

In this one, the effects menu is in the properties underneath the stage, but it's greyed out so I can't choose an effect.

I must be missing something, and I'm sure it's dead simple and something I probably did a million times in Flash 5 without thinking about it, but with the new layout and everything, it's completely elluding me!

Can anyone shed some light?

Problem solved, the menu with the effects in is still greyed out, but it looks like it's not the menu I want in this version. It's the "Colour" box which I've just found elsewhere.
