ASP without IIS??

Can you run ASP on your PC without installing IIS?? I'm playing around with ASP at work, but can't install IIS cause I'm not an admin.

IIS is by far the easiest way to get ASP to run...

You can run it on other servers, but clearly that's more complicated.

As far as I know there is no other way to do it...

Can you not install it on a home PC or get your work to install it?

You can download and install Apache (www.apache.org) and then get Sun Active Server Pages 4.0 (don't know the URL, you'll have to google for it) you have to pay for Sun ASP though, although Apache is free.

lol. just do what i do and test it on a server. may not be the easiest way but it does work for me. For some strange reason it won't let me run ASP files on my home pc using IIS. Guess I did something wrong...

This still doesn't really help...

he wanted something at work on 2k or XP that would run ASP that wasn't IIS...

the way you want it (no admin) there isn't anything suitable.

What sort of damage can I do anyway with IIS installed? They won't install it for me, they're giving me a second stand-alone PC not connected to the network that I can install IIS on. And they won't give me access to the test server yet. That's fair enough, cause I don't really know what I'm doing...

Well, it depends what your server is used for...

There are security vulnerabilities including spreading viruses and holes in your firewall, etc, that can be exploited through IIS and there are instances where IIS can compromise system stability, although all in all it's pretty rare and if you know a little about IIS you can avoid most problems.

I still think Apache/Sun ASP was a good idea

Can the server built into ASP Web Matrix run classic pages?

WOrth pointing out that it won't run everything. If you use the FSO or lots of other cool stuff, third party ASp engines fall over. I know this from the far too frequent support requests. We specifically state on our cart that it requires IIS and WON'T run on Unix with a third party ASP engine. But ISPs running unix tell people it WILL work. Then we get the flack when it doesn't. Basically, if you want to run ASP, run Windows and IIS. If you want to run Unix/Linux/BSD etc., get into PHP and you'll have a much easier life because it might actually work
