tables for navigation?

if most of my page is designed using CSS, would it be ok to code the left navigation menu using tables. or would this harm my search engine ranking?

It's a good rule of thumb to not use tables for anything but tabular data. Menus should be constructed using lists. <ul></ul> & <li></li>

I dont think there would be any point in using tables as you can achieve the same thing with divs or lists
