Re: maximum size for jpg in web
For the actual artwork people are willing to wait, its the design which should be kept to it a minimum.

Re: maximum size for jpg in web
40 kb isn't too much......
You can go much higher. How big are the pictures of the artwork? A decent 1600x1200px jpg is 136 kb....Or that what it is on one of mine... |

Re: maximum size for jpg in web
the pictures are about 2900*230 pix, and I will have 9 of them on a page,
shown as thumbnail, and on click they will apear in full size. is it reasnable? or will it take to much time for the page do load? thanks |

Re: maximum size for jpg in web
Make sure the thumbnails are seperate small images and not the paintings shrunk down in size, as it would mean they would have to load the full size picture first then the browser shrinks it down.

Re: maximum size for jpg in web
I would give them an option between the full-size graphic and 1024x768 (and/or 800x600). Many people have their browsers set so that the image will automatically resize to their screen, so it's a waste of time to have only a larger image.
One thing a lot of people do is to have a jpg 1024x768, then anchor the larger picture for download. |

Re: maximum size for jpg in web
As mentioned before, people who know they're big aren't going to get impatient. I'd keep them under 500kb at most, and underneath each thumbnail, let people know how big they are. That way they can make the decision to view the larger version or not.
