I like the look and the layout (preferred the first attempt) but it does look like a template which, I suppose, is the problem with templates.

I think you should design it for fluid. As that is the way the web is moving at the moment.

Try and get some more shading and a bit more color in there...the font has to change, take out the little type on the right (I know the look that you're going for...but it's not working there in my opinion). Overall, I think it has potential and I get a good feeling when I look at it. Nice job.

fluid means the site fits the resolution the browser is using rather than being at a fixed width. (Uses percentages)
