As Far As theoretical knowledge is concerned I have a little bit knowledge of it but I don't have any practical knowledge.

Re: Can link building help my business

Well...according to me, link building is one of the cornerstones of any effective search engine optimization campaigns. strong link building campaign, along with a strongly optimized website, is enough to make it rank high on major search engines.

Link building is the single most important aspect of SEO. If you could only do one thing to help your business online, that should be link building (assuming u have a decent and functional website).

Re: Can link building help my business

I agree with Spinal007 and I too strongly believe that Link Building helps increase your rankings.
But picking up random links from non relevant pages wont help you in any way.

You should go for links from highly relevant article pages. In doing so, not only your rankings would improve, but you get the targetted audience that you are looking for. I got link building done for my website from www.Bestlinksdeals.com. They focus on highly relevant article pages. Also, I let them handle my banner campaign. Links and banners from these highly relevent article pages really helped my site in the long run.

Major search engines place weight on quality relevant links, which is a good practice for Internet marketing strategy. One good quality, highly focused link is atleast 20 times better than a general link which is not considered a useful link by the search engines.

The pepper gun effect of numerous links but hardly any traffic is probably one of the "flags" that google looks for when deciding how to rank your page but unless you work for google, the above is pure conjecture.

what you can be sure of is that links from realting articles will drive more relevant traffic to your site, increasing the possibility of repeat visitors (as you already know they are interested in the subject and not just "stumbling" across your site).

This in turn shows search engines that you are more popular, and as such will effect you rankings.

Obviously, Quality and Relevancy is key - but "20 times better" is just a made-up number!
The tru number is probably in the thousands...

I just wanted to put forth the point that a relevant link is better than any number of non relevant links. Tens of thousands times better than a non relevant link.

Re: Can link building help my business

But is there any criteria by which we can define that a link is a quality link? What could be the parameters to decide the quality links?

Yes there are a few criterion to see if the links are of good quality or not. Below is a list which defines the quality parameters of a good link:
  1. 'Unidirectional' or only-Incoming (non-reciprocal) links
  2. Links with relevant "Keywords" in the Anchor Text
  3. Links from sites having a different range of PageRank
  4. Links from industry-relevant pages
  5. Link to your site should not be through a "redirect" script
  6. No JavaScript links
  7. No links from 'framed' pages
  8. No 'flash' embedded links
  9. No robots.txt excluded link pages
  10. No Robots Tag excluded link pages
  11. No paid or time-bound links
  12. Links spread over different domains
  13. No email spam used to solicit links
  14. No links from Link Farms
  15. No links from FFA (Free-For-All) link networks
  16. No links from Blogs and Blogspots
  17. No links from pornographic and other sites containing offensive content
  18. Links pace as per client convenience
  19. Links from different IP address
  20. Links from pages with less than 30 links

If done in a proper way with quality links, then link building can improve your rankings on search engines. Links from highly relevant article pages (Same theme as your website) improves your business because it gets targeted traffic to your website.

Re: Can link building help my business

Yes this is important. If you use google webmaster tools, you will see that it contains a section on internal / external links to your site. The spiders recognise the links back to your site, networking, giving you greater importance / a better chance of ranking higher in google.
