Review http://www.sunnysideeatery.com/ please!

please value this website which was tailor-made to exactly how the owner wanted it.

http://www.sunnysideeatery.com/

the logo was not designed my me. the menu wasn't designed by me but I broke it in (as seen on the website.) i've already changed the owner. I'm just curious to know for next time as I think I may have taken a little less than I should have.

thanks,

JamesQ

Re: Review http://www.sunnysideeatery.com/ please!

looks fantastic, but under the hood are tables. ugh.... tables are like a 2 cylinder engine, and CSS has 6 cylinders.

Also, is it necessary to have those huge white spaces in the logo? They seem pointless, and the image probably could be cropped down.

The menu is flash, and it could easily be done using CSS and a tad bit of javascript. Another critique about the menu: Home usually comes first, but in this it comes last.

It also has a few validation errors.

Re: Review http://www.sunnysideeatery.com/ please!

What exactly is your question!?

You asked for critique, so you got it!

The layout is very poor. On 1680 x 1050, all the content is on the last 1/4 of the screen, and is extremely bunched up.

The navigation is also very inaccessible. Users must have flash to use it, and Javascript to view the Menus (breakfast, salads etc.). You should serve a simple unordered list with links for these users, and they should be able to click 'Menu' then get taken to a page with details (rather than a pop-up which is blocked by IE7 and FF).

How much did you charge?

how much does a car cost?

sorry that's not meant to be rude, but to get you thinking around the differing variables that make up a pricing structure.

for a car you need to take many things into account:
  • brand
  • reliability
  • safety test results
  • engine size
  • colour
  • options (cd player, air con, sat nav, ejector seats, rockets, etc)
  • and on and on
you will then come up with a price

with website design & development, pricing something up is just as difficult. You need to think about the following:
  • code technology (html / css/ javascript/ jquery/ flash/ etc)
  • managment technology (flat v's cms)
  • content development
  • design
  • value of your time and experience
  • other expenses
you will also need to take into consideration how much other local designers are charging and balance yourself against these.

personally, your site isn't that technically difficult to do, and the food menu's are not going to change that often to warrent a cms. You also haven't had to do any content creation.

so this will mainly be your time and expertise you charge for.

hope that helped some.

p.s. i wouldn't have paid more than £250 for this type of site

p.p.s. all sites are tailor made to the clients requirements - this is not selling point
