Creating Intranet with HTML/CSS...Possible?

As stated in a differen post, I'm feeling pretty good about being able to get my sites to look "right" across browsers, so am feeling a bit over-confident in what I can do. I'm wrapping up the content for 2 sites right now and am still thinking about Freelance Web Design. Talked to a more experienced friend who lives in another city, and discussed working together on future projects so I could learn more.

What I'd like to do is create an "intranet" that the two of us could view work and timelines, and to-do lists from. It doesn't necessarily have to be a "real" intranet, such as one from a corporate entity. What I really want is a site only he and I could access, not publicaly available. We'd each have to sign n with usernames and passwords.

The site would have a "home page" which would include a blog or application like campfire to keep track of conversations between us. There would be links to apps like Backpack or Bascamp (for project to-dos), Highrise (for prospect management), and links to specific projectfolders so we would each have access to the files contained in each and could update independently as needed.

I'm not sure if this makes sense, but I am really just looking for a "private" website which could be used for porject collaboration that will provide links to various 3rd party web apps and project files.

Any suggesstions?

Again, probably more than I can do myself right now, but it is not time sensitive and I would love to know what I need to learn to accomplish this.

Simple. Get a host, don't bother with a domain name, and they'll give you an ip address. You can use that IP address for your site. Then in the control panel they usually have an option to password protect directories. This is an easy way to get a login.

As for the message board and all of that for collaboration, I'm sure there's a PHP script like that at hotscripts or something.

By "intranet" I'm assuming that you will be on the same local network, if so then you could just install apache on one of your computers and then put wordpress on there and access it via it's local IP address (will be something like 192.168.2.5).

If you mean same location/office by "local network", then no - we will be in different cities so would need to "network" long distance to same "site"

you'll need hosting then. I've heard some good things about WESH-UK. (It's the sponsor of these forums) Or if you prefer something in the states, ICDsoft is quite good, i use it for all of my hosting.

i have hosting for two other sites right now...I would simply use one of these accounts to host my "intranet"...I assume this would be possible? Or would I have to have an entirely separate account for such an endeavor? I really don't know too much about what would be involved in this and am just assuming a lot of things...yes i know what happens when we assume

It should be possible. Just get a subdomain on one of them, like dev.mysite.com or something.

Do you have cpanel on your hosting package? It's extremely easy if you do.

I do have cpanel, alex. What should I do with it? How do I "proceed"?
