Where to start?

Ok so pretty new to all this website designing and I want to know where to start. So i've got my learning resources for now and a text editor etc what kind of things should I looking to be starting off doing?

I was thinking just starting to make basic webpages and then slowly intergrate things such as CSS into it as I learn it?

How did many of you start off?

Re: Where to start?

You need to know HTML & CSS for sure. I would learn them together. There are tonnes of tutorials online

Re: Where to start?

Also is it better to learn to hand code or use an application such as dreamweaver?

Definitely learn to hand code. Dreamweaver produces bloated code and you don't actually learn to code using dreamweaver design view.

Also, if you have coded your site yourself, when things to wrong it will be a lot easier to fix.

Using Dreamweaver as a code editor is a good idea, but DO NOT use the design view, not a good idea at all

Design view sucks.

All dw is really good for is a nice way to color code things (just turn off code hints in prefs). You can get some nice text editors that do the same thing.

Re: Where to start?

I agree with you frinkky, but dreamweavers also good for site management in m opinion.

Say you had to change a file name, dreamweaver automatically updates all links if you need it to, saving you a lot of time and hassel.

I don't actually see the point in them including design view, because what your site actually looks like in real browsers is nothing like what it looks like in design view :S

Re: Where to start?

There is more option for you to choose a text editor that are more lite version than DW!
I use CodeLobster.

Re: Where to start?

w3schools and htmldog are good resources.

html dog also has tutorials taking you from an introductory level right through to more advanced stuff, a great place to start

Re: Where to start?

Regarding HTML editors, if you have access to dreamweaver, or are rather rich, i would reccommend it, however if none of the above apply to you, there are lots of free HTML editors you can get

http://www.webforumz.com/html-forum/...ml-editors.htm

As for learning, the best place of all is the web.

http://www.webforumz.com/html-forum/...ing-x-html.htm

http://www.webforumz.com/css-forum/3...how-to-use.htm

here are two great links to get you started, if there are any questions you may have, that is what this forum is here for

Re: Where to start?

Money isn't a problem for me at the moment as my parents are being kind and not making me pay rent so I invested in web premium by adobe as I do want to pursue this as a career. So I'm lucky there.

Thanks for your links will be sure to check them out.

Re: Where to start?

Having web premium is a great start , just a hint before you start, steer clear of table for layout, this is a big nono for todays designers

Re: Where to start?

Yeah I'm still confused about layout with CSS haven't looked at it properly yet. I designed a website when I was 13 using table layout for a gaming clan lol. Things have moved on in those 5 years lol.

Re: Where to start?

Take a look at some of the tutorials above and they will explain how

There is also an excellent article in our monthly newsletter explaining how to get started on using CSS for layout
