Searching tutorial on html editing to build website

Hi folks,

I haven't built webpage for >10 years. I'm prepared coming back. Previously I ran software on MS Windows building website. Now I'll change my way doing html editing on simple text-editor instead.

Googling brought me hundred of links on guides building webpage on html, difficult for me to screen. Can folks on forum shed me some light. I expect to have a guide, step by step, to build webpage with examples to illustrate. TIA

Re: Searching tutorial on html editing to build website

I remember the stuff they taught me Uni, about how to build websites, was outdated within a couple of years of graduating.

Get a book. Something with XHTML/HTML and CSS in the title.

Re: Searching tutorial on html editing to build website

Noooo dont get a book lol. You buy it, it will be out of date tomorrow, stick to the web. Now that your learning again, a lot has changed in the last 10 years, make sure u follow tutorials on building pure css sites, no tables!

Yeh, there are hundereds of great sites out there that give excellent tutorials on HTML.

Also, make sure that you are using CSS for layout, NOT tables.

Any questions be sure to post them here

Hi welshstew,

Thanks for your URL. I'll take a look on them following them at start. What I used before on MS Windows were frontend tools. Now I expect to come back running at backend, the basic.

Hi Craig,

I agree with you. The lastest info are on Internet NOT on book. Actually the content on book are a collection of the info on Internet. I learnt all knowhow on server building and admin on Internet as well as from folks' advice on respective forums. The later is very important. We help each others on Open Source.

I have a collection of those tutorials and guide searched with google such as;

How to Start / Create Your Own Website: The Beginner's A-Z Guide
http://www.thesitewizard.com/getting...twebsite.shtml

html editor
bluefish
http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/

Crimson Editor
http://www.crimsoneditor.com/

Tutoial
html/xml/browser script/server script/etc
http://www.w3schools.com/default.asp

HTML and CSS Tutorials. And Stuff.
http://www.htmldog.com/

XHTML2 Working Group Home Page
http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/

I hesitate which of them shall I follow in order to best-use my limited available time. So I start to post in anticipation to have advice from folks according to their experience.

Thanks

Re: Searching tutorial on html editing to build website

I find that http://www.htmldog.com/ is the easiest and msot affective for learning HTML.

Also search this forum if you have any questions, the chances are that the question has already been asked before

Re: Searching tutorial on html editing to build website

For a boook check out The CSS Anthology by Rachael Andrew when learning CSS. There are tons of online places as well, just google it. It all depends on preference, I prefer books to learn and have millions, whilst others here are happy just using online tutorials.

Thanks for your advice.

I think the best teaching material is on browser;

View --> Page Source

Of course it needs little effort sorting out the codes there.

>10 years ago I ran WSYWIG (WYSIWYG) editors building webpage, easy and comfortable. After turning to serve building and admin I ceased building webpages. This time I come back expecting to learn the basic instead of using the said editors which in fact are the frontend. The backend is still coding.

I won't build complicate/fashionable website but simple one introducing server and BI technogies. I may come back to java and pearl later which I almost forgot.

Re: Searching tutorial on html editing to build website

Your best sticking with a text editor or dreamweaver in code view satimis. WYSIWYG's barely look the same in a browser as they do in the program your building your site on. And yes, view source is a very helpful tool

I don't have dreamweaver here which I used >10 years ago. This time coming back I found the best teaching material is viewing the source code of other websites.

On Firefox;
View --> Page Source

Copying the whole content to a text file and save it as xyz.html file. Then on console (on Linux/Unix we say console/terminal, similar to DOS window on MS Windows) run;

$ tidy -im xyz.html

Re-open the xyz.html file with a text editor. You will have all codes and contents rearranged in a systematic way. Easy to read and exam.

Tidy is an Open Source software also available for Windows. It is used to fix mistake on HTML.

HTML Tidy Library Project
http://tidy.sourceforge.net/

You can try it. It is free to use for unlimited time.

Re: Searching tutorial on html editing to build website

Thanks for the link. I also agree with what Danny said, WYSIWGY browser windows do not display accuratly at all, dreamweaver is very bad from my experience.

Also, Ctrl + U on firefox displays page source, just a shortcut for you
