Thinking about getting my own blog, but don't know where to start.

I have heard that wordpress is one of the best, should i go with this?

You can change the design and layout of your site on WP can't you, is it possible to do this on their free option?

This won't be my permanent blog by the way, just for getting to grips with it etc

Another option is Blogger. You can also change your setting and choose your theme. Wordpress has this template chooser on their Admin, you are not allowed to upload your own template.

I would use Wordpress, It is fantastic in my opinon!

You can find a template that you like the layout of, upload it and change it in the admin area, and then you can change the look and feel of it, using css.

So I would definately suggest wordpress as the best blog software to use.
