Windows Hosting

I know most sites run on Linux servers. Anyone here using Windows for their hosting? What are the advantages of doing so over Linux?

Re: Windows Hosting

I don't host on a Windows box, but ... one advantage might be .NET.

If you want to develop using .NET, a Window host would be more prone to have it then a Linux host.

Re: Windows Hosting

I have a windows server.
You can use .NET like Karinne said this allows you to use web services (.asmx), ASP, ASP.NET etc.
Great for interaction with desktop programs.

This might be a bit more in depth than you want, but a good read nonetheless. Linux vs Windows Hosting

Re: Windows Hosting

Please carefully read what Alex said! Great for interaction with Desktop Programs!

I can't stand people who use .Net for public websites. Yes, you can drag and drop a calendar, but if the person browsing the site doesn't have the latest version of .Net they are going to get an error. Also, the site will bug in Firefox in about 100 different ways because Microsoft considers Firefox a below standards Browser.

ASP on the other hand is GREAT for doing websites and it is actually what I learned first. After taking a challenge and being told I couldn't create a PHP powered website in 1 week (never looked at the stuff) I learned PHP and never looked back.

Re: Windows Hosting

There are the advantages of .NET, asp and so on but I think linux is better generally depends on the host really. Because linux is more secure standard built on unix foundations plus linux hosting is cheaper generally as the hosting company doesn't have to pay to have linux on there server(with the exception of red hat linux) yet they do with windows. At the end of the day its all about preference and the quality of the host you can't compare a crap linux host to a fantastic windows host as regardless of server os the fantastic host will be better.

Re: Windows Hosting

I think you cannot put it like advantages purely, that's more about the requirements of your site.
Asp.Net 1.1&2.0 are provided in the plans of free and paid providers:
www.freewindowshosting.org is a free windows hosting provider
paid Windows serveices can be found in the following providers' plans
www.jodohost.com
www.hostcats.com/windowshosting.php

Re: Windows Hosting

If you intend to develop your site using ASP, FrontPage, the .NET environment, Windows Streaming Media, Access, MSSQL, or any of the other Microsoft’s owned technologies then you should opt for Windows hosting else linux is fine.

Usually Linux Hosting is cheaper as compare to Windows.

We do provide you both Windows as well as Linux Hosting packages with 24x7 live chat and phone support.

Re: Windows Hosting

I think Linux is more preferable in terms of usability and prices on Linux are cheaper. Most web hosting companies prefer to provide Linux web hosting but some provide both.
Say SiberName.com provides both Linux and Windows. Difference between Linux and Windows plans is only in price ranges, as for support and other features they are the same.

SiberName.com is a well-known Canadian domain registrar, I haven't known that they provide web hosting. I have heard many pleasant things about them as a rigistrar but know nothing about them as a host. Has anybody uised them? How fast do they work?

Re: Windows Hosting

I wonder why you would choose Windows -- well unless you use MS-based web languages that would be requiring. Go for Linux server - it's fast, it's stable, it's efficient.

Re: Windows Hosting

I think that advantages of providing linux web hosting are evident. But sometimes people are looking for the projects to be realized and use languages which the know most or that can be used to reach goals they want. And that influrence on the need in web hosting (linux or windows one). Anyway both are worth. I would recoomend you several companies: santrex.net - for linux web hosting and neowebspace.com for Windows and linux as well
