301 redirect in SEO
Hello friends, got a doubt.
Scenario: I wanted to buy the domain ABC.com for my new site. But that was not available. So I bought another XYZ.com domain name for it. Now I want buy a ABC.in domain and set it to redirect to my XYZ.com domian. Question: Will I gain higher search engine ranking when people search for my keyword 'ABC'? or atleast will the page be indexed as ABC.in All inputs appreciated. Thank you! Re: 301 redirect in SEO
You would gain a higher rank for ABC. I'm not sure how much Google likes .in's though.
Is there a .net available?

@Alexgeek,
Yes, a .NET domain IS available. Should I prefer .NET as it is a TLD ? |

I prefer them, and I think most other people do to.

Re: 301 redirect in SEO
Good choice! It's a more reputable TLD.

Re: 301 redirect in SEO
You will gain no higher ranking by 301 redirecting.
Status 301 means 'permanently moved', in SEO terms, this... - transfers any PR from ABC.in to XYZ.com - ABC.in will be ignored - not indexed, will not show up in search results, and does not weigh towards the ranking of XYZ.com Essentially, what you're saying (to the spiders) is: I'm ABC.in and I no longer exist - I'm now this XYZ.com ABC.in is never indexed and anything that had been indexed is updated to that of XYZ.com. All information on ABC.in is updated with XYZ.com. Hope that helps...

Re: 301 redirect in SEO
@Spinal, thanks fro your inputs.
So does that mean that one can use 302 temporary redirect instead?

Re: 301 redirect in SEO
Now, I don't know exactly what the long term effects of a 302 redirect are - it depends on the SE. But I know it's not good.
I 302 redirect means 'temporarily moved', so the SE will keep ABC.in in its index for a while, but it won't index the 'temporary' XYZ.com. As far as I know, if the 302 redirect stays for a long time, the SE will eventually drop ABC.in and only index the 'new' XYZ.com. In a 301 redirect, you are asking the search engine to keep all the information it has on ABC.in and TRANSFER it to XYZ.com. In a 302 redirect, the difference is, whatever information / PR / incoming links were associated to ABC.in will not be passed on to XYZ.com. XYZ.com is a new page in its own right. Now, none of the above will help you get higher rankings, but it can stop you wasting PR. For example, any missing page on my website 301 redirect to the frontpage - so that any incoming links are not wasted on missing pages - they are instead transferred to the frontpage. Hope that helps...

Re: 301 redirect in SEO
Ok, then how about this:
If he creates that ABC.IN and creates a link farm with all links pointing to XYZ.com, will he be able to benefits? If so, I too would like to do that!

Re: 301 redirect in SEO
Oh god, black hat SEO.
Link farms do not help, google picks up that they are just a load of crap and does not give any benefits.

ABC.IN creates a quality article site or blog (I don't know what content you are offering so i can't sat which) which writes quality articles and posts about XYZ.com. This would boost your SEO, but the important bit is that they must be quality, highly related and not spammy at all!
