Wordpress for Portfolio?

Need to design myself a portfolio showing me skillz and some of the sites i have recently built. Goal = to get job interviews.

I've seen some nice examples of wordpress sites done well on this site. I also like the ease of blogging on wordpress as well, i think blogs look good as part of a portfolio.

Do you think it's a cop-out for a web designer/developer to do a portfolio in Wordpress?

Should I just hand code it from scratch?

Discuss

Re: Wordpress for Portfolio?

probably a better idea to try to code a template for wordpress or another programme like it, much better than showing your work on someone else's template - shows more skill

if you cant do that, i would suggest building your own site or learning how to code your intended blog

Re: Wordpress for Portfolio?

Why would you need wordpress unless you plan to do articles on your portfolio (which would be strange).
Usually portfolios are static.

Re: Wordpress for Portfolio?

Cheers for responses.

The idea was to do a portfolio but also blog new stuff i have learnt and keep a blog of latest projects and how they are developing, problems i encounter and how i solved them.

Ah-ha, exactly, an unusual portfolio would stand out more (Well that's the theory anyway)

I only thought of using wordpress as time saving/and to show I have made something using wordpress in case an employer wanted an example of me following web trends/latest technolgies etc.

Just wanted to know everyones opinion really. It would be easy enough to make a blog myself using normal xhtml.

Re: Wordpress for Portfolio?

I would have the portfolio in plain ol' HTML and CSS.

If you want a blog, then use WP for the blog only.

WP doesn't make a portfolio "unusual", the design is what makes you portfolio stand out

Re: Wordpress for Portfolio?

Have you considered using Terapad.com? Terapad is customisable using the CSS and could lend itself to a portfolio style website. You could easily add new work and make use of the free shop and image gallery. Plus it would stand out from the Wordpress crowd. Check it out and please let me know what you think.

This is a good example:
