Book Review?

Hi all,

In my attempt to learn PHP/MYSQL, I have been searching amazon for some books to help. I seem to learn better from books than online, which is a shame as books cost :P

1) Has anyone ever used this book:

Also, for Christmas I got 'The Principles of Beautiful Web Design' by Jaison Beaird. HIGHLY recommend it. It's a fantastic book.

Web Standards Creativity
Designing with Web Standards
A Hands-On Introduction to Program Logic and Design Using Web Technologies - This is one of the best intro to php books I have ever read. Mike makes things extremely easy to understand, really nice guy wish he would write some book that are more in depth.
PHP In a NutShell - This is the PHP bible...lol.

Thanks Jacob. The 'Hands on Introduction to Program logic...' looks good. But the cover is terrible :P

I'll look into purchasing a few.

Yeah, it was not professional published. I worked with the author in editing this book, and I found loads of mistakes as far as spelling and grammar goes. But, I would still highly recommend this book. Its a very simple easy to understand programming book, which is hard to find. Some of the more complicated books are just too advanced to comprehend. He did a great job!

I can't really comment in to much detail as I learned almost everything I know online..

In regards to your first book I would say it would be a good choice..

I haven't read it but I own a couple of other books by Larry Ulman... One about DHTML and another for MySQL.. He has a very relaxed, human approach to writing and makes complex ideas easy to digest.

It's interesting that you learnt online. From where did you learn PHP/MySQL?

I learned a lot of the basics in PHP/Mysq from free forum software.

I never had any intention of becoming a web programmer but when I wanted to customise my forum I had to dive into the PHP code... The software was very well commented and I would do a search online for anything I didn't understand..

After playing around with that I started writing my own PHP and reading some more advanced tutorials online. Then I could start to come up with my own approaches to coding.

EVeryone learns differently though.

THat is true as I cannot really learn online. I have found however, on dads bookcase, a book on 'Creating your own Database Driven Site' with PHP and MySQL.' I'm gonna try it!

Haha... The best way to learn, i feel, is to get thrown in at the deep end.. .I mean by building a CMS or something - thats what i did.

My sister wanted an e-commerce site and I offered to try....knew nothing when I started. But Webforumz has been fantastic. I have learned loads here and I also us online tutorials. It is amazing what you can find.

That is what I'm doing! I've already learnt a bit, come stuck with the encryption though!

Best PHP book I have ever read.

Great ready to use, practical examples and a good teaching style.
