A Level Advice!

Heading to college in September 08 - cannot wait?

Does anyone here do 5 A-LEvels? My parents want me to but from what I hear it is a lot!

I'm thinking of doing:
COmputing (Coding software and eventually a basic OS)
English Lang/Lit (Bit of both)
Maths
Further Maths (Yeh, I'm mad :P)
*Economics (If I do 5)

I want to follow maths in the future, you get paid here to train as a Maths Teacher.


Any opinions on college most welcome,

Well, I did 5 A-levels, but one of them was a complete sham: General Studies, for which I spent no time studying. I did:

Maths
Further Maths
Physics
English (literature; language wasn't available)
General Studies (6 hours of my life for a qualification nobody respects)

Officially, Further Maths was supposed to be no harder than Maths, but it actually was. Still, I got A's in everything, and went on to study Maths & Philosophy at Oxford.

Your A-level choices are diverse, so they should keep you interested; and you have three "big-hitters" in there that will give you good prospects of entering many science or arts courses.

My opinion, for what it's worth, is this: do what you want.

Um i am doing: Maths, Physics , Graphics and Chemi

Much be in the same year jack,

I am going to my school's 6th form, if i get in!!

Wow - you better be clever Simon - Physics and Chemistry are two of the hardest A-Levels you can do. Especially Chemistry - trust me - been there done that

I am failing most things lol but my sciences are A* wow

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is an A-Level?

We have the Junior Cert in the 3rd Year of Secondary Level Education. A points scheme with 400 points being the maximum. One must pick a minimum of 4 subjects - each being 100 points each.

The Leaving Cert in the 6th Year (of sec.ed) - A Points Scheme, the higher the points the better (if that is politically correct). It decides which subjects are available for one to study in Tertiary Education. The maximum achievable points is 600 (Picking Six Subjects at minimum - each at 100 points). Medicine would be 585 points with Computer Science being around 465.

Or are the A-Levels a form of degree at Tertiary Level Education?

Roughly speaking:

Junior Cert = GCSE's
Leaving Cert = A-levels

Penair, I'm right near three milestone and I'm going to the HE building on truro college at the moment.

I did 5 (one being General Studies and not worth it), and a few S levels as well (pre-cursor to AS levels before they became modular), but then I was an uber geek (still am actually!).

My advice would be to do what you want to. If you think you can, then thats all you need to know.

P.S. Maths - eugh....

I'm right next door to Truro College, doing a university course branched off from plymouth.

I've done my 3 years at College

I know some people in falmouth

When I went it was the norm to only do 3 but that was the last year they did straight A Levels. Now you have to do that AS Level crap. What is good about that though is that you can take 5 and then if you like after year one drop your worst one or two and concentrate on your best subjects and still have a pseudo-qualification for the ones you left after one year.

5 Alevels is possible, but be prepared to put the work in.

Started college in september 07 and curently doing

English lit
Maths
Further maths
Law
Ilex(legal qualification)

Further maths is a lot harder than normal maths, do not let anyone tell you different. 10 hours a week, with the added pressure of being expected to be better than all the other groups.

Dont let this put you off though, if you enjoy maths (as i do, i no i am weird lol), it is not that difficult, jus be prepared to do a lot o work outside college.

As for the 5 A levels, if you put in the effort, it is possible. At the end of the day as well, if after you Jan exams you find that you cannot cope with 5, you can always drop one and retake any bad exams in may/june.
