Need Opinions on new layout (add, fix, drop)

(I'm hoping this is the right place to put this)

I'm working on a new look for my site, something a little sleeker, keeping the basic theme.

New home page thus far

Any suggestions for adding, removing, and/or fixing/rearranging?

I'm mainly looking for background suggestions, places to add more yellow without ruining it, menu touch-ups, what to do with the news header (and if you have any suggestions for how to have it update automatically with my freewebs blog) and how i should redesign the portfolio.

by the way, when this is done, should I start a new topic in site critique or revive my old one?

It's very dark (blackgrounds can be that way) and center aligned text is horrible.
I think you may want to look on cssmania.com for some inspiration.

I agree. There's too much blackground! The yellow doesn't brighten it up, either. I suggest ditching the current color scheme and going with less black.

Maybe you can put different color for your Banner and Footer!
Font type: Times New Roman? Try Verdana or Arial

Re: Need Opinions on new layout (add, fix, drop)

Alexgeek - yeah, i wanted to ditch the gradient background for various reasons, and a yellow background might be a little... kiddish. and yeah, i guess center is almost as overdone as left.

swanger - any ideas? i wanted to go with yellow and black since my old blue and white was... well, cliche.

monie - probably, ooh, what about making just the 80% area with the content in a gold-yellow gradient and keeping the outside black? And i'm actually using Palantino, i just like those kind of fonts, beats the hell out of Comic Sans (my old one with the blue-white). And the reason the bars are like that is i have their width at 80% so they fill the whole width normally.
