[SOLVED] Slice it, or float it?

Yes, I know, another question but I tell you this site has been so amazingly helpful when the answer to that question has been impossible to find.

So.

The 'effect' I'm trying to achieve is this:

As you can see, the 'Bridge Garage' logo sits on top of a gradient bar, attached to which is the navigation menu beneath the bar to the right. However, as new as I am to CSS, I am struggling to find a way which would make this possible. Would my best option be to slice the entire area and include it as an image, or can the bar be included as it's own image ans positioned as such so it's layered beneath the logo?

I was told that an image could be 'written in' in the style sheet if it were a purely decorational piece so that the HTML pages were left containing only the information. However bringing in an image using CSS is something I'm a bit shakey on.

Any thoughts or ideas would be hugely appreciated.
