Ehh, it hasn't been long since V4 has it : D Well here's another version of /Bolt for you to poke with a stick, if you're that way inclined. This is my favourite layout now. I love the menu, background and general sleek look of it. Well what's new? First of all I've added links. One to my story, Jarkal and one to my Website Making Tutorial which people are lovin' already
Check out my animations page too. It'll be updated with a few new animations and some great joint animations, thanks to lemonAde and ubergamer. Also, there's a few new sticks for you to check out if you use Pivot Stick Animator. Enjoy!

Re: /Bolt V5

I updated the background image a few times. Still not sure what I want although the current one is pretty cool.

Re: /Bolt V5

I don't like the blue on the border and links. It's to in-your-face. Maybe try a more pastel blue color....

Re: /Bolt V5

Not enough text contrast (dark grey text on dark grey background). I prefer light colour schemes anyway; light text on a dark background is becoming less popular these days, as designers realise that light colours are more welcoming.

Validate your HTML!

And this made me laugh (from your web tutorial):

Quote:
Text menus are a good way to fix this because you don't have to download each pixel like images. The downside of this though is that if your viewer might want to change your font size of your content and doing that will change the size of your menu. This may ruin the layout so I suggest using images
I love how designers get their brains muddled like this.

Designer thought process:
  • Text menus are good because of smaller file size.
  • But users might resize the text.
  • Oh no! I can't let them break my beautiful layout.
  • How can I stop them resizing text?
  • Use images!
  • So I get what I want (perfect layout), by stopping the users from getting what they want (the website is easier to read).
  • Hurrah! A solution with no drawbacks. Designer, 1; Users, 0.
And here's another one:

Quote:
Decipricate/Decipricated - I use this word to say that the tags have been replaces by another element and shouldn't use it, as it may not be recognised in the future.
Classic. The word is deprecate (and deprecated).

Re: /Bolt V5

Love the blue background... but the site is causing serious eyestrain.

You may love it with the tone on tone fonts but you will lose visitors because it's so hard to read. I

Not liking the equals in the navigation. I felt like I was at a math site.
Why not try :: between?

I like how unique this is however. Breaking rules can be fun!

LOL

Your menu is weird.. Right untill Lchad mentioned it was a menu, I thought it was some sort of legend. Replace the "=" for :: or ||..
The colors aren't that great either.. looks like the background is more important than the content..

Re: /Bolt V5

Hmmm I have to agree with everything said about ... the blue is just too blue/bright.

And the light gray text on gray background = not good for visually impaired people. I wonder if Daniel can read anything on your site.

And the same can be said about that tutorial site ... the white on light gray ... Yikes! I had a hard time reading and I'm not colorblind.

And like MikeH, I found something in your tutorial site that made me go

From http://www.darkdemon.org/bolt/wc/wtb/#tables

Quote:
Tables
Tables are a great way to space out information on a webpage or to create a layout.
How can you be showing this deprecated method to people?

Resources for learning how to use CSS for layout

From http://www.darkdemon.org/bolt/wc/ac/#text

Quote:
Firstly I'll go over the font tags <b>, <u>, <s> and <font>.
To begin with this I want to say do not use the <font> tag! This is decipricated in favour of CSS.
Now for the three other tags:
<b> - This tag bolds the text inside the tags, for example: <b>TEXT</b> would make the word 'TEXT' bold.
<u> - This tag underlines the text inside the tags, for example: <u>TEXT</u> would underline the word "TEXT".
<s> - This tag places a strikeout line through the text inside the tags, for example: <s>TEXT</s> would make a line through the word 'TEXT'.
The U and S elements are also deprecated!

Index of Elements

From http://www.darkdemon.org/bolt/wc/wtb/#doctype

In the DOCTYPE section, you don't mention the XHTML doctypes at all but all your code that you are showing is in XHTML (<br />, <img .... />, etc....)

Colour Schemes - RETURN TO TOP
The colours in your site are an important thing. You need to make sure your colours don't clash or irritate your audience. This is a big thing to pay attention to because using colours incorrectly can make your content unreadable or difficult to read. It can also depend on age. Younger people are drawn to bright colours more than dull colours while adults prefer greying and 'toned down' colours. Teenagers are somewhere between and since this is who I am creating this site for I'll use the colours between the grey and bright colours.
Colour is a great way to separate parts of the web page and is a good idea in most cases as it makes certain areas more distinguished and can draw your viewers attention using strong contrast. Making the background dark and the content bright, or dark content and bright backgrounds, can draw the attention to the content, making it easier for the viewer to see what is important.
You can also use colour to draw your viewers to things:
I bet this caught your attention!
That is one of many ways to draw attention to certain things. It can be a great effect if it isn't over-used or hard on the eyes.
You need to think about your background image and your content too. If you have black text over a white box and your background is black, you have a problem. If for some reason the white box doesn't show up, this makes your information invisible and your viewer can't see it, since there is black text on a black background. So make sure your information is visible under as many situations as possible., by using a scale of shading. For example, put white text in a grey box on a black background. If the grey box doesn't appear, you could still read the text because the white text is visible on the black background.
¬Hmm. Ouch, can you imagine a user coming to your site, straining their eyes and then reading the above from your "Make a Website - Color Schemes Section". Come on!

¬Tables. What can I say? CSS. You know it.

¬Equals Sign. Used for Mathematical Equations, not as a separator. My old Maths teacher have an aberrational attack! Change it to a "-", "|" or a "~", as suggested above.

¬On another note: Doh, Re, Me, Fi, Si, La. (Okay, no melodic minor scales here!) Your *Visual* is lovely (except for the mentioned above)
Your graphics are nice, and if I was to really "poke your site with a stick" I'd say the corner graphics look a bit rough.

Hope you change the things we have mentioned,
Ed

Re: /Bolt V5

"Depreciated" is how you describe a car that has lost value. As in, "My Mercedes depreciated by £3000 as soon as I drove it out the showroom".

"Deprecated" is the word.

"Deprecated" is the word.

I think "Deprecated" is the better option, but both are technically correct.

Depreciated
(1) To represent as of little value or merit; belittle.

Deprecated
(1) To express earnest disapproval of.

In fact, Depreciate is a Synonym of Deprecate.

I think we're just getting caught up in little technicalities!

No, deprecated is not technically correct. The word "deprecated" has a precise, defined meaning in W3C specs; the word "depreciated" has no such meaning.

When I say "<u> is deprecated", I don't mean "<u> is of little value". I mean that <u> has been marked by the W3C as an element that "has been outdated by newer constructs" and "may become obsolete in future versions of HTML". (See the relevant W3C definitions page.)

The use of "depreciated" to mean "deprecated", in the sense given above, is simply incorrect. Moreover, just because an online dictionary calls something a synonym does not mean that it has the same meaning! There are relatively few perfect synonyms in English.

The very same page on that dictionary lists "refute" as a synonym of "complain". So do you think "refute" and "complain" actually mean the same thing?

Trust me on this; words are my trade.
