Seo

Hi all!
I was just wondering, what does everyone use to optimise and submit there websites?

& if IBP is a good one to use?
Because that is what we use here in my work?

Thanks

Re: Seo

SEO can be achieved without the need for expensive software - one of the best pieces of advice is forget the search engines and design the site for the customer/visitor.

I'll list a few simple SEO procedures to follow though:

1) Try to avoid link exchanges unless they directly benefit the visitor. An example of a good link exchange that is beneficial is two local information sites linking to each other - this helps the visitor. Most link exchanges though are simply done to try and boost search engine rankings, making your site look unprofessional. Google has now also added a section in their guidelines about link exchanges saying that they'd prefer if people didn't - I agree with that and I think link exchanges are probably becoming less and less powerful every day.

2) Don't design the entire site in flash or use images for the entire site - this is completely useless to search engines which can't recognize or index either, so while the effect will look good to the visitor, to search engines, the site looks mostly blank.

3) Avoid keyword stuffing anywhere on the site. That goes for the keywords themselves, the site description, image alt attributes and invisible text at the bottom of pages (all often used by wannabes to try and improve rankings.) Not only does this not help visitors, but it makes you look like you are trying to game the system and could mean your site goes down in rankings, rather than up!

4) Content. One of the best ways to optimize a site and get what's most important, visitors, to your site is providing quality unique content that people will recommend to their own visitors and will bookmark. It's fantastic for getting organic one way links. Blogs can be good for a site in this way if you think your main site is unlikely to grow much.

Hope all this has helped

Re: Seo

Yeah I get what you all say there, and you are correct, but... How do you submit you website then to the search engines?

Thanks

Re: Seo

I personally submit my sites manually e.g http://www.google.com/addurl/ would allow you to submit to Google, same sort of thing for yahoo, msn etc.

If you let IBP or webceo or other programmes do it for you be careful of the search engines you select, or you could be in for a major e-mail bombardment.

You get indexed in google quicker than you do if you submit your site.

Re: Seo

Yeh I've heard of that thing about adding your URL - it sort of gives the impression that you can't get any links to your site on your own. It makes sense really - I don't manually submit anymore, instead I just let them find me. Doesn't take more than a week or so
