Overriding a pre-existing webpage

Hey-I'm re-designing a website that is currently on the web. The web host, who was also the former designer, sent me the password and login information, and I'm attempting to upload the new website that I designed using the "Publish Server" tools in Adobe GoLive, and I think I'm doing everything correctly, but apparantly, not.
Any thoughts?

Did you redesign the entire site or just selected pages?

Make sure you only have one index.htm or one index.html page on the server. The first one will override your new one sometimes. Otherwise, I'd need more info..

Thank you so much for responding to my question! I think I deleted the pre-existing index file. I went to the original file on the server and cleared the index.htm file. The original designer made a separate file for me and I put that file in the "directory" portion of the server dialog box, with the correct password, username and servername. And yes, I am uploading a whole site, not just a few pages.

If we could see the page it would be more helpful when trouble shooting. As of right now we can only guess. Give us a URL please!

the current webpage is sevensistersgallery.com. The site that comes up is the older webpage, and not the one i designed

I wonder if the host has the server pointed at the old directory and not your knew directory?
I'd ask that...

Also have you cleared your cache and/or refreshed your browser?

these are great questions! I will ask the web host today about the directory. Could you please tell me how to clear my cache and refresh my browser? My browser is safari and the web program is Go Live. Ya'll are being so helpful to me.

Control + F5 on the keyboard... on PC... not sure about mac.
Open Safari and there must be a "tool" option?

LChad--thank you SOOO MUCH! OK, so i just reset my browser and emptied my cache and when i typed in the URL (sevensistersgallery.com) I was directed to a page titled "Index of/" with a "parent Directory" under that and all of the previous designers images and pages. I already deleted the previous "Index.html". So my next question is- how do i get the server to recognize my page without having to open the file with my name on it (which holds the website I designed) Do I need to make sure the web host is directing the server to the file that contains the new web page? Or should I empty out the contents in that folder and put them in the same list as the previous page?

That's a good question.. someone else might be able to answer better than me.
However since the host made that directory for you, I would probably be inclined to say that she should just point to the directory. It would be easier since you have everything in there already.

Can you not just delete the files that are already there and upload the ones you've done?

Thank ya'll so much--this has already been very helpful to me. I am going to call the host and make sure she is directing the server to my directory. I guess I'm afraid to clear all of the previous stuff- i don't know if i delete it, it will be gone forever, or will the host have backup in case we want to incorporate some pages she's already designed into the new design.

If you use an FTP program you can connect to the directory and download all the files that are there - that way if they're ever needed again you'll have a copy of them.

You could download all the old files onto your computer. Then you would have them.

Then delete and reupload new stuff.
