It looks like you solved your problem. The page looks nice. My one suggestion would be to make the main pictures larger, at least 500px wide.

If you want to number the photo, assuming you have a graphics program, a simple but somewhat tedious way would be to extend the size of the graphic wherever you want the number, and add a layer with the number on it. On the plus side, it would give you a lot of control over the appearance of the number and background.
