What name to use in business...

Hi all...

At the moment I have a kind of brand name of 1840dsgn (link in sig).

But I can't decide what I want to do or what is best to do.

Do you think if I want a freelance company for myself that i should use something personal like www.mike-jongbloet.com rather than use a company name and use "i" rather than "we"?

Luckily it hasn't really taken off at all yet so I'm still in a position where I can change everything and it not cause any hassle.

So what does everyone reckon?

Mike

I don't know. It depends on wither you are planning on this being just you and your personal web development and design company. Or wither you plan on hiring people and forming some sort of corporation and taking over the world!

Re: What name to use in business...

lol!

I imagine it will just be me. Definitely just me in the forseeable future...a good number of years at least.

So in that case dya reckon I should go with mike-jongbloet and scrap 1840 for now?

That is what I would do. Then when you get to a point where you want to hire people, then perhaps consider a name change, or don't...up to you!

Yeah i would go with your name, give it a personal touch. I think people like to think they are dealing with a person rather than a web-page.

Re: What name to use in business...

As a sole owner you do have options...but there are things to consider when selecting a name.

1. It is best to select a name you want to be known under forever. If you gain your reputation for excellence under Mike... that is the name you should stick with.
2. Company name changes are a pain in the rear...promise. Example: I worked for NorthWestern Bell that became Qwest, which was bought by Pacific Bell, which became SBC, which became ATT which was the parent company of Northwestern Bell, where I started....

I personally have always liked the 1840 and I personally think 1840design is a great original name...my opinion.

Re: What name to use in business...

Yep, I agree. Name changes are a pain! I just went though a business name change when I bought out my partner...it was a pain, and I am still filling out paper work.

Also, everyone knows my company under the previous name, so I am kinda stuck...but I will get things worked out!

Oh, and yes I like the 1840design as well...very creative!

But if you used that name then everyone would know a very personal detail about you!
