% or px when defineing DIV layouts

Hi All,

I just have 1 question (it might turn out to be no more than preference but want to check before i start going down the wrong road).

Anyway I was just wondering when working on the layout in XHML/CSS is it best to setup your websites template (eg divs) using % or px, because different browsers break % differently but % then rescale depending on the resolution, didnt know if there was an actual preferred way of doing layouts that I ought to be enlightened with.

Any feedback would be appreciated.
Cheers

Re: % or px when defineing DIV layouts

Depends, on your layout and your content.

If your layout is largely images based you don't realy have a choice, you have to use px
If your layout uses very little images, and has a huge amount of text for content, then %'s are better. Normaly it ends up being a combination of both tho.

Re: % or px when defineing DIV layouts

Well my site will mainly be text on the majority of pages and I would like the site to fit as neatly as possible in multiple resolutions so I think based on your comments I should probably go with % layout, but I do have a header logo which I will need to sit central at the top of the browser, is there a way of setting this to resize based upon the screen resolution?

Re: % or px when defineing DIV layouts

yes a % will fit to the viewers browser. As for the logo just center align it.

Re: % or px when defineing DIV layouts

Just for scenario sakes:

What if I wanted a three column website with header, I want the left column to be fixed width (to hold some rather sexy buttons) now I obviously dont want this column to be a % because otherwise as the screen res changes the sides of the button/s will contain empty space. I also want the same for the right column as this will hold links etc that will fit a set standard width.

The header is irrelivant, however the middle "content" column, I wish this to be readjusting so that it fits inbetween the two fixed width (pixel sized) left and right columns, but if the user has a larger screen resoultion the middle content column will readjust to grow wider/narrower.

My question is: is this possible?

Many Thanks
Gecko
