Re: web development

Ok if I was you i would choose one of ASP or PHP/MySQL. Essentially they are the same thing, they can perform the same taks but they are different.

However, in my opinion PHP has the advantage over ASP in that it is free, easy to set up, easier to learn, functions more like other coding lanuages, isn't run by Microsoft, and is more widely used and therefore there are many more learning resources and scripts to learn from.

So basically I would learn PHP/MySQL! It is an easy langage to learn the basics, depending on how quick you are at learning. I managed quite quickly however I still have a very vauge understanding - yes I can developed booking systems, cms systems and blog system but i probably don't create them efficiently, but I am still learning every day!

Your first thing to learn is to have a good understanding of Xhtml and css - you will be needing these to see your scripting in action!

A good place to start is in the new to web design section sticky threads.

Good luck!

Absolutely agree with 1840dsgn. PHP/mySQL is the langueage to learn. I used Xampp. You get an Apache server, PHPadmin and mySQL. They do it for Windows, Macs and Linux/Unix. I taught myself..so can you.

Re: web development

lol yea I slowly realised as I was thinking of ads/disads to list for each...all the ads were for php!

I personally use easyPHP, same thing really, installs all those things locally. so you can get developing!

Re: web development

ASP does have advantages over PHP but isn't so easy to pick up the basics. Do a bit of research before you decide. Major corporate stuff is almost always ASP or has been traditionally.

Re: web development

Hi,

I would recommend the following technologies:
  • PHP 5 - OOP (Object-oriented programming)
  • Mysql Database Server
  • Javascript
  • XML
  • AJAX - Asynchronous JavaScript and XML
Using these technologies you will be able to create great websites

Dont forget about graphic design as well - take a look at www.gimp.org

It depends on the paltform what you use if you are just on windows then ASP would be better but most webdeveloper prefer to code through PHP due to it's open source and great community support.

When you use ASP you are using either JavaScript or VBScript or C#
This is one of ASP's strong points, it's a stronger language, despite its complexities.
