Theres been a load of new bbc websites latley, all to do with on demand tv. The thing is they are really badly made, I mean have a look at the page source for this one

[I see 90 validation errors, including no doctype] theres even some passwords and stuff in their. Also notice all the tables!

Even the BBC 1 page has over 40 errors!

Is there a reason for this?

You would think the BBC would do better woudn't you? Just goes to show you can get a page rank of 8 just by getting in bound links, quality of code has nothing to do with it.
