The online manual is fabulous as a reference ... but it doesn't provide much on technique and how to make great use of PHP. Rather like trying to learn Romanian from an English to Romanian dictionary ... great for working out how to ask for haddock once you've done the fundamentals.
Now ... having given that warning about the superb reference manual, I should suggest alternative. Really a bit of a problem in PHP as it's best learnt from practise / experimentation / mentoring rather than from a book or web site (it's one of "those" subjects, I'm afraid). And I don't know any mentors / classes I can point you at on the West Coast or in Hawaii ... unless you happen to be ski-ing at Tahoe over the new year in which case I'll meet you in the bar one evening!
