Looking for a place to get advice on how to fix a problem with Dreamweaver 8
Hi,
I'm wondering if there is a place here where I can receive advice on how to fix a problem that I'm experiencing in Dreamweaver 8. I cannot seem to get my pages to link to my html documents where I can view them in a browser before I upload them. Is this the place where this question can be answered? Thanks Last edited by ICEMINISTRIES; Jul 12th, 2007 at 10:50. |

Post up the html and we will have a look. This could simply be because its on your hard drive rather than on a server but it could be something else too.

Is that a problem with it being on my hard drive rather than on a server? Would that prevent me from being able to link from one page to another in my browser, even though the pages have been linked? Is there a way to fix this or is it something I can only do if the html is on a server?

Here are the two html files which will not link to one another in Dreamweaver. By the way, if I used Adobe Photoshop to create the site, can I hyperlink the two pages there before I edit it in Dreamweaver?

I'm not entirely sure. I know that sometimes I can't link to certain pages when I'm working locally, I think it might depend on how you are linking them. You can solve this problem by installing something like xamp which is an installation package of apache, MySQL and php. This would install a server (and other goodies) on you hard drive which just means that a certain folder on your hard drive will behave exactly like an online server would.
If you can then post up the code and I'll make sure there aren't any problems with it. Pete. |

Where do I get the install for xamp from? Once I find it what code are you suggesting that I post?

It's quite simple you just need to install it. Did you download the installer? Then after it is installed the directory .../xamp/htdocs is your root folder. Create a new folder in here and do all of your development/ testing from here.
It should pretty much work out of the box. Pete. |

I've jus had a look at your code and to be honest I have no idea what is going on in there, it's insane. It looks as though the links are set ok but there is so much extraneous stuff that I can't navigate it properly. This the main problem with Dreamweaver, if you aren't careful it can create really bloated code. Try it on a server and see what happens there, it might work.

Re: Looking for a place to get advice on how to fix a problem with Dreamweaver 8
Ok, let's take this step by step....I downloaded the installer and installed it on my computer. I now have a folder called "xampp" and inside this folder I have a bunch of other folders and files that are MS-DOS batch files, then there are 5 files which I do not know what they are. They are red looking files: xampp_restart, xampp_start, xampp_stop, xampp-control and xampp-portcheck. How do I use these files to do development/testing?

Just put all the files in there and open it up in a browser. Then see what happens.
