please help!!

Hi, i am pretty new to web design so i am having a few problems.
I have just completed a website. I have all my dreamweaver pages in a root folder. When i uploaded the folder in my FTP the site was not displayed. A folder appeared on screen in the browser window with all the pages in it when the site url was entered.
Is it true that the index.html page should be outside the index folder and sit alone within the root folder.
Should the root folder be called anything specific when uploading it.

When you enter your site URL, eg: www.webforumz.com your server looks for a file in the root directory (and that directory only) to use as the main file. This can be index.html, index.htm or sometimes index.php, default.asp, etc.

It doesn't matter if you have additional files.

thanks for ur reply. i uploaded the files with my index.html page in a sub folder within the root folder called index. after uploading the whole root folder the index page did not appear.instead there was the word 'index of' at the top of the page with the word parent directory. underneath that is my root folder. if you go into the folder and click on 1 of the pages in the files it opens the website and it works.
How do i get the index page to load first
Do u have any idea how to amend this. have i saved the work the wrong way.ie. is the index page in the wrong place. If so could you tell me how to save the files properly in the right structure
Thanks

I'm not sure I understand your explanation.

Each directory, including the root of your domain needs an index file if you want to display one.
