image1 = new Image();
image1.src = "background.gif";

</script>

From http://www.alistapart.com/articles/slidingdoors2/

Quote:
IE Flicker: If you’re seeing a flicker of the images when hovering over the tabs in IE/Win, check the cache settings for temporary files (Tools > Internet Options > General tab > Settings button). You may have changed the setting from the default to make sure you’re seeing the newest version on every page refresh. IE/Win has trouble holding a background image steady on anchors if you’ve specified “Every visit to the page” for temporary files. The default setting is “Automatically”, which allows the browser to instantly retrieve the image from cache, preventing any flicker. Most users never change this setting; most likely, they don’t even know it exists.

thanks catalyst - that seemsa to have done it!

(altho it was already set to automatic....so i flicked it to every and back and it worked....how odd)

but now im worried that many people have the same problems and that these buttons become a flaw.....is this a common problem, do they flicker for many people?

cheers

It's the big reason I still use javascript rollovers rather than CSS.

There is a hover technique using CSS that will fix this problem and is actually faster and more efficient than javascript rollovers.

http://www.alistapart.com/articles/slidingdoors/

Hopefully that helps. It will work in every browswer and be quick and seemless.
