what does apache do?

I was wondering, since apache was a server, what exactly does it do? Does it allow you to host your own website? or just test PHP scripts?

Re: what does apache do?

apache is a web server.

At a basic level when someone requests a web page from your server apache is the program that listens for the requests and sends the correct html page back.

At a more advanced level apache can also serve php pages.

The normal OS that apache operates on is linux/unix but is available on mac os x or on windows.

As of March 2007 Apache served 58% of all websites.

Re: what does apache do?

I use Xampp which includes Apache. I use my Apache to check my site on my local computer. http:localhost is a great little tool. That way I don't have to pull my site up and down from my host server. And even better, they use Apache.

Re: what does apache do?

Nah, xampp is much better. Also Sara, just for fun...lol, you can edit your httpconfig file and change the URL to which you access you local site over your network. I changed mine to http://server/ and http://localhost/ and http://domains/ each go to a directory within xampp, ahh so much fun!
