This is a design I'm doing for a new website I'm starting. Please let me know what you all think. The eventual goal is to put some of it in flash, which I will be doing soon, but for now I just want a critique on the overall design.

LMK. Thanks!

Jarrett

Re: New design to review

Looks interesting!

Few things:

1) The text on the right is much too difficult to read, both in terms of being too small and the color contrast with the background.

2) In the coding, you don't have any of the top stuff - coding standard, doctype etc.

3) You've used tables (Karinne! where are you with your CSS info?)

Hope this helps as a starting point, I'm sure others will have more to say

Re: New design to review

It may just be my browser but it looks like your images have gone haywire. But from a purely design point of view it does look very aesthetically pleasing to the eye, and from a coding point of view I think it may work better as CSS as tables are very outdated now. Im not too hot with CSS but Im pretty sure if you wanted to use CSS the guys on here would help out.
Hope that helps a little

Re: New design to review

Would anyone be so kind as to convert this to CSS if they have time, if it's not hard to do. I've tried but I keep running into errors. Email it to me at Jarrstin@hotmail.com. I'd greatly appreciate it!

Re: New design to review

Well it's not that difficult just a bit time consuming that's all. No one will have the time to be honest. Do it yourself, a steep learning curve but worth having the knowledge.

I have another good reason to convert it to a tablelss css layout, because if you don't I swear I will cry. It's a great design ruined by dreadful code. Please, please changes it.

Pete.

Increase the font size and contrast a bit. It will make it easier to read. I am not sure why you use an iframe for the text. It can hinder search engines from understanding your site.

Re: New design to review

I'm not using an iframe, I'm using a CSS scroll with the overflow attribute.

Re: New design to review

I've found what I was looking for - have a look at 'Karinnes resources for learning how to use CSS for layout' which is within the beginner resources on this site, oh, I should have put a link to it here...nevermind, you'll find it.

You say you've tried CSS and keep running into errors - well that's a good thing! Running into errors and figuring out how to solve them for yourself is the best way to learn.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the design itself (apart from the small non-contrasting text we've mentioned), so if you sort the coding out you should have a good site.

Re: New design to review

The best thing to do is give it a try yourself. When you run into a stumbling block, post it in the css forum and we'll help you sort it out. In no time, you'll have a great hand coded site and the satisfaction of having learned a ton! It's addictive!

Re: New design to review

Holy images BATMAN!!!

Seriously, I would have: 1 image for the whole background (1), the images for the menu (5), the images for the pages (News, etc...) (1 on each page), and 1 one more at the bottom (Bleah Gamer) (1)

So ... that 7 images in total (plus the 3 little ones at the beside you copyright stuff).

If you want someone to convert the site for you, post in the Job section. I would do it, but not for free.

Re: New design to review

That's is one ROCKIN' Site! I love it. If you could do something about the text in the scroll box it would be even better!
Once you solve the coding issues and get away from the dark ages... You'll have a great site!

Re: New design to review

I've been working on the site slowly converting it over to CSS. It should be done by monday hopefully (it would be done sooner but I picked up the flu about a day ago =/ ).

Thanks for all the advice and kind words. =)

Hiya Jarstin,

I love the graphics and color on this website - well done you have a very otaku / modern comic graphic style which comes across great. I think the finished product will be great!

Re: New design to review

hey, I like your site. I just think your buttons should be rollovers, and like everyone else is saying your text isn't very appealing. Also, why is the handle of the sword a swastika?

Re: New design to review

Bleach is an Japanese comic book and animated cartoon. The character that is displayed on my site is the main character from the story - Ichigo. I didn't design the character or his weapon, so I have no idea about that. =P
